I’m pleased to announce a new release on Chandos with the wonderful Kitty Whately, devoted to the songs of Madeleine Dring. Born into a theatrical family and admitted to the Royal College of Music at just nine years old, Dring went on to study with distinguished figures including Herbert Howells, Gordon Jacob and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Although she built her career largely in the theatre, where she was renowned for her ability to produce witty and memorable numbers at remarkable speed, her songs reveal a distinctive voice of charm, sophistication and emotional subtlety. Her legacy, long overshadowed by contemporaries such as Elizabeth Lutyens, Elizabeth Maconchy, Grace Williams and Ruth Gipps, is richly deserving of renewed attention. We have drawn widely from her output, concluding with Dring’s sparkling version of In the Still of the Night by Cole Porter, a fittingly stylish close to a captivating programme.
