International opera and theatre director and Ustinov Studio Artistic Director Deborah Warner brings to life Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter Journey), a cycle more Deborah Warner Director International opera and theatre director and Ustinov Studio Artistic Director Deborah Warner brings to life Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter Journey), a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, performed by renowned tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Julius Drake. A man begins a long journey through the snow in deepest winter. He wanders alone, grief stricken, longing to forget the memories of his beloved who has rejected him. His journey is tortured, painful and leads him to question his identity and existence. Composed in 1827 towards the end of his short life, Franz Schubert’s Winterreise is considered one of the greatest and most powerful musical masterpieces. The music captures the torrent of emotion and poetic themes of loneliness, darkness, winter and love. Deborah Warner’s new staging for the Ustinov Studio honours Schubert’s original intention for the piece to be sung to an intimate gathering. Ian Bostridge’s extraordinary international career has taken him to the foremost concert halls, orchestras and opera houses of the world. His vast experience with Schubert’s Winterreise (he has performed the song cycle in concert over 100 times) inspires his book Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession (2015). With an international reputation as one of the finest instrumentalists in his field, Julius Drake collaborates with many of the world’s leading artists, both in recital and on disc. He has performed and recorded Winterreise with Bostridge and many artists throughout his career. “Winter Journey” is an indispensable work of art that should be as much a part of our common experience as the poetry of Shakespeare and Dante, the paintings of Van Gogh and Picasso, the novels of the Brontë sisters or Marcel Proust.” Ian Bostridge (Sunday) 19:30 Theatre Royal Bath, Ustinov Studio Theatre Royal Bath, Sawclose, Bath BA1 1ET Deborah Warner Director

This epic song cycle was started in a Hollywood hotel in 1942 and saw the composer collaborate closely with fellow émigré Bertolt Brecht. The result is a searing and still relevant commentary on inequality, war and enforced immigration, set against the seemingly beautiful backdrop of Los Angeles. Not to be missed. Pianist Julius Drake accompanies the ensemble under the direction of Klaas Stok. »I am a conservative. I preserve progress,« Arnold Schönberg is said to have once said. As contradictory as the statement sounds, it is true. In retrospect, the name Arnold Schönberg is often equated with atonality and twelve-tone music – but the composer’s path there led him through the Romantic period. Now, eleven years later, she returns to the festival, this time collaborating for the first time with Julius Drake. Together, they offer a heartfelt tribute to Victoria de los Ángeles during this centenary edition, featuring works by Mozart, Strauss, Schubert, and Brahms. For Ofelia Sala, Victoria de los Ángeles has always been an undisputed inspiration. She holds a special place in Julius Drake’s heart as well, as she was his mother’s favorite singer. "This project, which has been more Anna Prohaska, Soprano Soprano Soprano Anna Prohaska and Pianist Julius Drake come together once again to present selections from their highly praised album “Paradise Lost” “This project, which has been two years in the making, finds Anna Prohaska and Julius Drake exploring music on the themes of Eve, Paradise and banishment. Some songs were obvious choices, such as Fauré’s Paradis, in which God appears to Eve and asks her to name each flower and animal, or Purcell’s Sleep, Adam, sleep with its references to Genesis. But Anna Prohaska also wished to illustrate the cliché of the woman who brought original sin into the world and her status as a temptress who leads man astray, as in Brahms’s Salamander, Wolf’s Die Bekehrte or Ravel’s Air du Feu. In Das Paradies und die Peri, Schumann conjures up the image of Syria’s rose-covered plains. Bernstein also transports us to the desert with Silhouette. John Milton’s seventeenth-century masterpiece Paradise Lost was the inspiration for Charles Ives and Benjamin Britten, also featured in this very rich programme that constitutes an invitation to travel and reflection.” Programme: Olivier Messiaen: Gabriel Fauré: Claude Debussy: Jean-Yves Daniel-Lesur: Igor Stravinsky: Hugo Wolf: Johannes Brahms: Aribert Reimann: Benjamin Britten: Hans Pfitzner: Sergei Rachmaninoff: Charles Ives: Henry Purcell: Franz Schubert: Robert Schumann: Hanns Eisler: Gustav Mahler: George Crumb: Leonard Bernstein: (Tuesday) 20:15 Concertgebouw Concertgebouwplein 10, 1071 LN Amsterdam, Netherlands 05dec19:30Pierre Boulez Saal with Roderick Williams19:30 Pierre Boulez Saal Roderick Williams, Baritone

Today’s most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks vocalists he admires. Scottish mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison is praised for her refined yet full voice. ‘A real star,’ according to the Times. You will also hear baritone James Newby, winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award. He recently released the acclaimed album Fallen to Dust. Julius Drake chose a series of songs full of drama and poetry for Morison and Newby. That poetry sometimes comes from Mahler himself, as today in Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. ‘When my dearest marries’ is the name of one of the songs. The lady in question did not marry Mahler, who experienced this as a ‘glowing knife’ in his heart. He processed all his frustration and sorrow in this stirring song cycle. In the five lyrical Rückert-Lieder, he shows a happier side. Perhaps today’s most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks vocalists he admires. Today, these are mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and bass-baritone Jusung Gabriel Park. In Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Mahler chose his favourite texts from the very old German collection of the same name. He composed twelve sometimes fairy-tale-like songs. Love, faith, heroic deeds… everything floats by. They are sung by Macedonian-Canadian Ema Nikolovska and South Korean Jusung Gabriel Park. The latter is making his Amsterdam debut. Drake chooses to have some songs sung by the soloists together. ‘Even though they are not necessarily written as such, there are often clearly two characters speaking,’ he said in Preludium. ‘And as a duet they work really beautifully.’ (Saturday) 13:00 Concertgebouw Concertgebouwplein 10, 1071 LN Amsterdam, Netherlands 14may13:00Concertgebouw with Feride Büyükdenktaş and Stuart Jackson13:00 Concertgebouw The Recital Hall is dedicated to Mahler's most beautiful songs during the Mahler Festival. Perhaps the most important song accompanist of the moment, pianist Julius Drake, flanks his favourite vocalists. Today, these are Feride Büyükdenktaş and Stuart Jackson. Together they sing the moving Das Lied von der Erde, in Mahler’s own version for two vocalists and piano. Six narrative movements make up Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. He based the songs on texts about nature, death and life. He used ancient Chinese texts in German translation. A ‘drinking song on the earthly vale of tears’ is the start of a stirring series of reflections on farewell and new beginnings. Das Lied von der Erde was written for two voices. Today you will hear Feride Büyükdenktaş, a Turkish mezzo-soprano who has already shone on the major opera stages of Vienna, Stuttgard and Istanbul. British tenor Stuart Jackson gets jubilant reviews at home, and is now more and more often singing across the globe. Perhaps today’s most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks his favourite vocalists. Today, you hear British mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron, praised by critics for her charisma and clarity. You will also hear young tenor Laurence Kilsby, the 2022 winner of the Wigmore Hall’s International Song Competition. Mahler’s moving Kindertotenlieder are set to texts by Friedrich Rückert. This song cycle deals with coping with the death of two of the poet’s children. Some years after its completion, Mahler himself lost his daughter. Julius Drake had already regularly performed the Kindertotenlieder with Fleur Barron. ‘Fleur has such an extraordinary voice,’ he said in Preludium.’ A mezzo, but when she sings, you can hear a contra-alt, very special.’ Drake also chose several pieces from Des Knaben Wunderhorn for this recital. For these works, Mahler based himself on old German folk song texts. Mahler drew from the same textbook before. Today, Barron and tenor Laurence Kilsby perform the Lieder und Gesänge, a song cycle Mahler wrote in his twenties. A special recital is dedicated to his wife Alma, combining pieces by her with those by friends. Perhaps today’s most important Lieder accompanist, pianist Julius Drake, flanks his favourite vocalists during all these concerts. Today you will hear French soprano Axelle Fanyo, a ‘true storyteller’ according to Forum Opéra. She shares the stage with one of the greatest Dutch talents, baritone Raoul Steffani. Austrian Alma Maria Schindler was introduced to her future husband, Gustav Mahler, by her composition teacher Zemlinsky. Under Mahler’s name, she would become known – but never primarily as a composer. Mahler did not want his wife to write any more music, and Alma herself also had doubts about her work. Although most of it has been lost, her late-romantic, often melancholic songs are still widely performed. Here today in the Recital Hall, they alternate with pieces by friends and acquaintances. Axelle Fanyo and Raoul Steffani perform songs by Ernst Krenek, Mahler’s son-in-law. You will also hear works by Berg, Korngold and Stravinsky. In this Lied und Lyrik program, Katrīna Paula Felsberga and Julius Drake explore the wideranging musical afterlife of Hölderlin in the “free future century” he envisioned in his 1806 Hymn to Freedom. The texts will be heard in musical settings and readings.
