Approximate running time: 1h 30m without intermission

It seems almost impossible to imagine German lied without Goethe. Filtered through the musical genius of many composers—Franz Schubert first and foremost—his poems provided the nucleus of the genre’s full-fledged emergence in the early 19th century. Spoken and sung, Goethe’s words serve as the theme of this first program in the new series Lied und Lyrik, conceived by pianist Julius Drake. Together with Christoph Prégardien and actor Udo Samel, he traces the poet’s legacy in settings from Beethoven to Hugo Wolf.
