It is from Schubert that Schumann takes up the torch of cycles composed such as collections drawing from the source of a single author, the lied passing from the miniature to a dramaturgical and cosmogonic construction. In Liederkreis Op. 39, Eichendorff’s meditations on nature become intuition of the invisible forces of the universe. The famous Diechterlibe Op. 48 ( Les Amours du Poète ) taken from Heine, manifests both the joy of Schumann at his imminent marriage to the young Clara Wieck, and the foreknowledge of his own tragic end.
