Deborah Warner, an internationally recognized theatre and opera director, has continued to push the boundaries of theatre and redefine the vocabulary of the stage through a body of work marked by raw energy and sharp intelligence. For the staging of Winterreise, Franz Schubert’s last great lieder cycle, she frees the performers, Ian Bostridge, a long-time enthusiast of this cycle and author of a fascinating and captivating book – “Schubert’s Winter Journey – Anatomy of an Obsession”, and Julius Drake, a key musician of the Lundis Musicaux de l’Athénée, from the constraints of a traditional recital to offer them a much wider range of artistic and scenic acting. A deeply moving work, a striking theatrical and musical experience.

In the fall of 2021, Christoph Prégardien, Udo Samel, and curator Julius Drake launched the Lied und Lyrik series with a musical and literary tribute to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Now the three artists are back to explore the works of Eduard Mörike, who even in his own lifetime was called the most important successor to the master from Weimar. In readings and musical settings from the 19th and 20th centuries, they invite the audience to discover the unexpected and the mysterious beneath the Biedermeier façade of Mörike’s verses.

The Rebellious Recital
“Music is the ultimate boundary breaker,” says Alice Coote, “so why are we still performing and experiencing it in tightly sealed genres or categories? Why are we being so divisive with music?” In her recital, for which she is joined by Julius Drake, the mezzo-soprano explores unexpected paths and presents a kaleidoscopic program highlighting multiple traditions, eras, and styles from Bach to Joni Mitchell. “For this concert, we have tried to juxtapose works that say some of the things that we possibly all feel, irrespective of ‘genre’”.

Two powerhouse voices — Grammy Award-winning soprano Axelle Fanyo and electrifying mezzo-soprano Fleur Barron — join internationally acclaimed pianist Julius Drake for a bold and theatrical journey through the Seven Deadly Sins.
From the biting wit of Weill and the sensual charm of Ravel to Broadway flair and the dark drama of Schoenberg, this eclectic programme spans art song, cabaret, and musical theatre. Mahler, Poulenc, Bernstein, Sondheim — and more — performed with fierce artistry and flair.
Seven sins. Countless thrills. One unforgettable evening.
