‘Could, would, should Alice Coote give a Tina Turner encore at the end of this recital? It wasn’t a totally ridiculous idea. The magnificently mercurial British mezzo had already stood and delivered Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, and Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach in London’s temple of song. Jacques Brel and John Lennon were yet to come. So perhaps a soulful arrangement of I’ve Been Loving You Too Long could be whipped up by the pianist Julius Drake? In the end Coote returned to Lennon (now with McCartney) for a final number: Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight.’
